We were delighted to welcome Bishop Peter, Bishop of Chester, to St Leonard’s on 6 July to confirm our 4 candidates: Jane Buckley, Elizabeth Cooper, Andrea Heath and Hannah Heath. They were well supported by their own family members, but it would have been good if more of our regulars could have been there for such a great and uplifting spiritual occasion with Bishop Peter. Our candidates answered all their questions with conviction, and confidently knelt before the Bishop to be confirmed. Thanks to Hannah for reading the passage from Paul’s letter to the Romans with such poise.
The Bishop took as his sermon theme a sentence from this letter: “I don’t do the good I want to do; instead I do the evil that I don’t want to do”. Life, he suggested, was a contest between good and evil, and this contest was not going to go away now that the candidates were being confirmed. He explained what his own confirmation – as an undergraduate – had meant to him. He commended the courage of the candidates in choosing to be confirmed.
Afterwards folk gathered at the back of the church for tea and cake. Grateful thanks to those who made all this possible. There were good photo opportunities after the service.
So well done to our candidates. They take their places as mature members of the church, having bravely made in public a Christian statement of faith. We offer them our prayers and support.
So now we are well into the holiday season. Everyone has their own special time of the year, but this must be a favourite of many. A good time to reflect on the good things of life, and to say thank you to God for all His blessings.
